The Cenote Ring

Painting exhibition at Studio Berlin

This body of paintings draws from the underground bodies of water that form the cenote ring in Yucatán, Mexico. The works evoke the cenotes as layered environments shaped by geology, belief, and ecological tension. Saturated colour, vertical drips, and rhythmic mark-making reference vegetation, roots, and reflective water, activating the paintings as sites where deep time and contemporary conditions intersect.

This exhibition is part of a multimedia project that investigates the symbolism, history, and myths surrounding the cenotes. It addresses the complexities and tensions of belief systems and worldviews by connecting the historical significance of this geological feature, created by an asteroid impact, with contemporary societal issues such as consumerism, expansion, speed, and resource accumulation amid an ecological crisis.
